First Time Travel Nurse? Here are some key things to research when preparing for your first assignment.

  1. Health Insurance: Research the services you’re eligible for under your current health insurance plan, both in and out of state. Find out if your health card is accepted in the province you’re relocating to. What medical coverage is provided by your agency or employer?
  2. Cost of Living: Research the average cost of living in the city you’ll be moving to. Use sources like Economic Research Institute or Expatistan. Use your findings to plan an accurate budget for your stay. Track all your expenses with a financial planner and KEEP RECEIPTS.
  3. Cimate: You have to know what the seasonal climate is, as well as the average daily weather condition in the exact location you will be living in. Weather conditions can differ even in the same town so check all this information beforehand, and pack accordingly.
  4. Transportation: The accommodation you select for your stay should be in close proximity to your assignment facility. Select the best mode of transport for your convenience, according to the area’s terrain. Arrive at least 12 hours before your first shift to check your route.
  5. Retailers: There are certain goods or services you won’t be able to get outside of your state so check for the accessibility and availability of retailers in and around your destination, and postal services.
  6. Recreational Spots: A good way to ground yourself in a new place, is to keep some sense of normalcy or familiarity. You can do this by continuing to engage in your daily routines. It is also a good idea to research activity hubs near your assignment destination.

Finally, GO WITH AN OPEN MIND. Be confident in your abilities and be open to learning new ways to improve your skills. Also, have a bucket list! Try to explore and welcome new experiences.
